This past weekend I graduated from Cleveland Chiropractic College with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. This marked the end of nearly four years of post-graduated studies. My professional name will now be “Chris Barnes DC.” It has been a long hard road to get here, but I wouldn’t change anything about it. Ali and I moved to Overland Park, KS in July of 2007. We have literally been in Kansas for 90% of our married lives. We thought we would just move up here and knock this whole school thing out. However, we have met some incredible people and Kansas has become such a wonderful home for us. It will be incredibly hard for us to this place but we will always try to make time to visit Kansas City. The beauty of Overland Park is that it’s less than four hours from Tulsa! I have learned a great deal in the last four years, but I’m even more excited about the things I will continue to learn. I will be starting a practice in Tulsa, OK within the office of Peterson Chiropractic. Ali and I will be relocating to Broken Arrow, OK in late May and Ali will hopefully be getting a new job around the same time. I will continue to visit KC throughout the summer for miscellaneous seminars so it will be a nice slow goodbye. I wanted to thank everyone who has made Kansas City such a great home these past few years. We will not forget all of the wonderful people… and barbecue! Check back regularly as we have lot of other great things to share with you all. And yes, from now on you must call me “Dr. Barnes!” -Barnezy-

MPI Gait Seminar 2011

This past weekend I traveled to the great city of Chicago for my second MPI gait seminar. About a dozen Cleveland students and another 160 or so students and doctors were in attendance. The seminar was held in a conference room in the Sara Lee building. This year, the seminar was even better with much more in the realm of analysis and less focus on treatment. The treatment portion is covered more thoroughly in the extremities seminars. The guest speakers were Peter Breeze from New Balance and Shawn Eno, a pedorthist and owner of Xtreme Footwerks. The MPI instructors did a fantastic job in lectures as well as the gait labs. On Saturday night, I ventured downtown and ate at the renowned Lou Malnati’s pizza restaurant. The deep dish Pepperoni was one of the bests I’ve ever had! I then ventured over to the Adler planetarium and took a few photos of downtown. The skyline was a bit different as it was earth hour and much of the city lights had been turned off. The temperature was about 25 degrees, but the wind was blowing in excess of 50mph. I got some pretty good windburn on my face, but it was worth it to get a nice skyline photo. I’m looking forward to my next MPI seminar in June where I’ll be spending time on my favorite region; the shoulder. It’s been an absolutely insane month but things are going great. Ali and I made our final offer on a local house and are waiting to see if they are going to accept it. So many life translations at once, but it’s been a great ride! -Barnezy-

Professional Football Chiropractic Seminar in Indianapolis

So nearly a month ago I had to opportunity to go to my first PFC (Professional Football Chiropractic) seminar. The seminar was hosted in Indianapolis as the same time as the NFL Combine. Throughout the weekend we heard from four excellent speakers as well as NFL chiropractors and NFL Athletic trainers. It was a great opportunity to meet other sports chiropractors from around the country. There were also incredible vendors present displaying products such as the Optogait and portable Hyberbaric Chambers. Cleveland was well represented as we took a group of 13 students. This was the biggest seminar the PFC has had so far and I think it will only continue to grow. Two of the speakers included; Tom Hyde DC, and Mark King DC. I have done video/photo work for both of them think the world of them as leaders in our field. If you know my by now, you know that being in a new city for the first time means I had my camera in tote. I went out a little bit each night to try and capture the beautiful city of Indianapolis. There were TONS of monuments as well as other interesting architecture. There was even a strike at the courthouse next to our hotel. My time for seminars is coming to a slow very soon. I have a gait seminar this weekend, an ART long tract nerve course in two weeks. I’m also taking Kinesio taping seminars (4 total) within the next couple of months. After that, I’ll definitely be slowing down in order to focus on practice. Things are starting to get interesting as I’ve had the opportunity to work on more and more patients in our clinic. I’m just about one month from being able to practice and there is still so much to do. It’s a crazy but exciting time and I cannot wait to move back to Tulsa to start this great new transition in our lives. I’m still a couple of blog posts behind and will try to get them posted this weekend. I will also post on the next few seminars as well.

Cleveland Chiropractic Fall Photo Shoot

Last weekend I was commissioned to shoot some family photos for Cleveland Chiropractic students. I absolutely would not have taken on this project alone, so I recruited my good friend and fellow photographer/strobist; Alan Yoder. We had just finished 10 days of board reviews spanning over 60 hours so our brains were a bit fried. We started outside and had just got our lighting the way we wanted when the rain came down. We moved everything inside and dropped a black backdrop to finish the rest of the families. Wouldn’t you know the rain stopped and the sun came out the second we set up. Besides that and a few misbehaving little boys the shoot wasn’t too bad. The photos are available for order HERE. It wasn’t our finest work, but given the circumstances and the 15 minute time slot per family, I’d say we did alright for our first multi-family shoot. On another note, my wife had shoulder surgery yesterday where they repaired her labrum and tightened her capsule. She’ll be in a sling for a few weeks but I”m confident she’ll bounce back pretty fast! The weather is beautiful, get out there and enjoy it! More stuff coming soon! -Barnezy-

Crazy Times!

I’ve been away from my website for the longest period of 2010. I’ve been bombarded with finals, board reviews, boards, patients, weddings, etc… There has definitely been a lot going on this past month or so. I’ve got a big photo weekend up ahead of me so hopefully I’ll have some photos posted next week. I sold one of my Glock handguns to my good friend Alan and used the money to purchase a “new” Canon 1D Mark III camera. It’s the previous edition of Canon’s flagship sports camera, but it has the fastest autofocus of any camera in their lineup. I’ve been shooting a lot of races and plan to in the future so I thought it was a worthy upgrade for the type of work I’m gravitating too. My wife and I have decided that we’re only going to shoot two or three weddings next summer because of me starting into practice. I’ve been making some good progress here in the clinic at Cleveland Chiropractic College and hope to start getting busy real soon. I’m meeting with a surgeon in Tulsa this next week and we’re going to decide what type of surgery my right shoulder is going to require. My right shoulder has a type 2 acromion process which causes impingement. This is what ultimately ended my football career. I had this surgery on my left shoulder over last Christmas and I have been very pleased with the results. The issue with my right shoulder is that I have a fairly substantial labrum tear and based on its location and the stability I have it may require a full repair. Simply shaving down the acromion process would fix most of my impingement problems and I would be back in the clinic within three to four weeks. However, if a labrum repair is indicated I will be in a sling for six weeks and I will only be at 90% five to six months after surgery. If this is the case, it will make finishing my clinical requirements at Cleveland very difficult. I’m also planning on doing a preceptorship with Peterson Chiropractic in Tulsa. This is a three to six week period where I would intern with the office and learn it inside and out and make preparations for moving in next spring. I would have the ability to treat patients if my shoulder is recovered. Speaking of shoulder surgeries, my wife is scheduled for surgery next month to repair a torn labrum that is causing her tremendous pain. Can you imagine us both walking around in slings at the same time? Needless to say there are a lot of things going on, but finishing my requirements at Cleveland in December would make life a whole lot easier! Mike and Melanie’s Wedding

Yesterday my wife and I shot Mike and Melanie’s wedding in Lees Summit, MO and today I’m posting the photos. I finished them in 18 hours, that’s probably a new record for me. I do my best to be faster than any other wedding photographer out there, and next day is pretty incredible! Given, I don’t do as much post-processing as most pros. I like the majority of my photos to look natural. 10 years from now, the photoshop action photos of today may just look plain stupid, but natural photos will always be in style! Off of the soap box – on to the wedding. I met Mike and Melanie through my wife as she has taught with Melanie for the past three years. Ali and I shot their engagement photos earlier this year and have been looking forward to their wedding. It was a sweltering 100 degrees or so but we were able to find a few shady spots outside. I took a few traditional posed photos since there were lots of family present who wanted photos with the couple. I’m trying to do a mix of posed formals with grandparents and more contemporary group shots with the bridesmaids and groomsmen. I have another wedding next Saturday, making it three weekends in a row. I’m also shooting the Route 66 quarter marathon in the morning the same day. Next weekend is going to be ridiculous! I’m looking forward to the fall where I can focus primarily on seeing patients at Cleveland Chiropractic College! Clinic has been a blast so far and I’m making some great progress with several of my patients! I can’t wait to get in the real world… I hear you actually get paid. 2010 Tulsa Full Moon 5K Run

This past weekend I had the pleasure to watch my dad run in the 2010 Fleet Feet Tulsa Full Moon 5K run in downtown Tulsa. It was my first year to attend the race. I believe this is the largest 5k race in the state and Fleet Feet does an excellent job of putting on the event. There were 2500-3000 people at Veteran’s park enjoying the race, music, food, and the weather. I’m nearly two weeks removed from jaw surgery but I’m still feeling very weak so I took my time and didn’t shoot a ton of pics, but wanted to get used to using my heavy gear again before too long. Here are a few samples from my “roll of film.” Trimester 8 of 10 in Chiropractic school starts for me on Tuesday so tomorrow is going to be a ridiculous errand day. My list is gigantic, but I’m getting up early and going to do the best I can. I will be able to start seeing Kansas City outpatients in just a few weeks so I’m pretty excited about that. I hope you all had a wonderful mother’s day and were able to spend it with family! -Barnezy-

CCC Admissions Portraits

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to photograph some very lovely ladies this morning at school. Our admissions office is updating their website photos and wanted to have them shot a little different than they had in the past. I used a simple 2-light setup with a backdrop light with a blue gel, but forgot my reflector and a few other things so I was forced to improvise once I was at school. I think the final product turned out well with my lack of ideal setup and so many different face types and skin tones. I’ll be shooting a large group shot of these same ladies in a month which should be a bit of an adventure as well. Enjoy -Barnezy-

Cleveland Chiropractic College Business Card Luncheon

When a student becomes an intern in the student clinic at Cleveland Chiropractic College, the college has a business card luncheon to commemorate the benchmark in our education. This represents the beginning of our clinical experience and our beginnings as doctors of Chiropractic. We will spend the next trimester diagnosing and treating students at our school, while also learning to do a complete physical. Next trimester we will enter the outpatient clinic where we will be able to treat members of the general public. After 8 months or so in the outpatient clinic, we have the option of interning for a Chiropractor local or abroad where we will finish the rest of education while preparing for the last part of our national board exams. And then like a young bird we are pushed out of the nest where we will either fly… or not. Not the most delicate way to put it, but statistics don’t lie. 40% of chiropractors will fail or change professions within 10 years of graduating. Well on that heavy not, why not a lighter one? We had an absolutely beautiful snow here in Kansas City and the night ended very nicely with a celebration at my favorite restaurant in KC…. Oklahoma Joe’s! A Jumbo Chicken Z-Man and a Jumbo Brisket Z-man hit the spot every single time!!!!! If you’ve never tried Oklahoma Joe’s…… you are only going through the motions of life!!!! IT’S INCREDIBLE!!!!! I attended an extremity adjusting seminar this weekend presented by The Motional Palpation Institute. Dr. King and Winchester are two of the finest instructors I have met at any seminar and they went out of their way to figure out why my wife has pain that no one seems to be able to diagnose correctly.
