Earlier this week Christian singer Josh Wilson came to Tulsa to play a Christmas concert at Southern Hills Baptist Church. We went with the friends the Sheffields. JJ Sheffield is a member of the Matt Roberson Band and has played with Josh Wilson before. This summer I was invited to the YEC conference in Norman where the Matt Roberson Band played for Josh. Josh’s Christmas concert was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. He played 20 different instruments and recorded each instrument creating “loops.” in the process. It was a remarkable concert as Josh is not only a very talented singer, but a tremendous musician. The church was packed and Josh played for a solid two and half hours. It was my first time using the Canon 7D. I sold off my Canon 5d Mark II and Canon 1D Mark III in preparation for the release of the Canon 1Dx in March. It’s been a busy time this holiday season and we’re looking forward to some much overdue time with family. Merry Christmas to all of you and thanks for all of the Happy Anniversary wishes we’ve received this past week. -Barnezy-

This past weekend my wife and travelled to Newark to shoot some videos for FAKTR. FAKTR stands for “Functional and Kinetic Treatment with Rehab.” It’s a concept of treating musculoskeletal pain that implements techniques like Graston Technique and Active Release Techniques and makes them more functional. Active Release Technique has been my “bread and butter” technique for the last four years, but after learning the concepts of FAKTR and being amazed at its results, I no longer look to Active Release as my go to technique. I never thought I would say this as ART is what what made me want to be a chiropractor, but after resolving conditions with FAKTR that ART did not, I’m confident I’ll be using FAKTR as my “go to” for a long time! This brings us to why we went to Newark for the weekend. I offered to re-film the FAKTR training videos after taking one of their seminars. They took me up on my offer and flew us out to Newark for the weekend. My wife and I stayed with Dr. Greg Doerr, one of the founders of FAKTR. We had a great time shooting videos on Friday followed by a great italian meal with the video crew. On Saturday, my wife and I ventured into New York City with our little Hyundai Genesis rental car. I showed the NY cabbies how we do things in KC and received quite a few horns of applause. We only had a few hours in the city but visited Central Park, The Apple Store, Times Square, and a few other landmarks. We spent the night with one of my oldest friends Joey Guzman and his wife in Poughkeepsie, NY. The only bummer of the trip was that our only day we had for leisure was blanketed with a thick fog and constant drizzle. I hope we get to go back within the next year so I can actually take some good photographs this time. Overall, my first trip to NYC was great and it blew away a few of my preconceived ideas. I’ll try to post a brief video clip from the footage I shot which demonstrates the use of my Canon 5D Mark II, Redrock Rig and Lowel Lighting kit. Looks like the snow is finally melting around here, can’t wait to get out and do something! -Barnezy-

Where do I begin with this one? Tyrel is a dear friend who was one of the groomsmen in my wedding. We met while at the University of Tulsa and have continued to be good friends even with our incredibly busy schedules. I met Lana at Tulsa as well. She was friends with my wife and brother-in-law as she’s from the same high school. I would describe her very much like my wife in many respects. It was great knowing them as separate people, and even better knowing them as husband and wife.

I’ve been gradually working on my HDSLR videography this past year and wanted to see what the potential was with the gear I have presently. I brought along my trusty Canon 5D Mark II, Redrock Micro Cinema Rig, Marshall 5 inch LCD screen, Zylight Z90 LED light and the following lenses: Canon 24-70mm 2.8L, Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS II L, Canon 15mm Fisheye 2.8, Canon 200mm f2.0 IS L. I shot most everything from the shoulder but played around very briefly with an inexpensive “Indi” dolly. I used my tripod for a few shots during the ceremony. The venue was beautiful but very dark at most times. It was also very tight in places and I was unable to maneuver for the shot I wanted on multiple occasions. I much prefer a wide open venue where I can shoot from a distance, but sometimes you’ve got to roll with the punches. Overall I think the video turned out well, there were a few focusing issues but I’ll blame them on the new marshall external monitor that I am still getting used to. It was a beautiful event for two incredible people and I think I captured just a little bit of that magic in this video – Enjoy. -Barnezy-

This past weekend, my good friend Jared and his girlfriend Lauren visited us in Kansas City. Neither of them had ever been, so we gave them a pretty good tour of our city including: The Legends, The Plaza, and of course, Oklahoma Joe’s. We went to the country club plaza on Friday and Saturday night. On friday night the weather was a beautiful 57 degrees with a calm breeze. I had been wanting to get some photos of the plaza during Christmas since this is our last Christmas in Overland Park, KS. How I wished I had brought my camera equipment on Friday night. Lauren really wanted to go back on Saturday night since the stores are not open very late. Saturday night brought a whole slew of surprises including but not limited to: 10 degree temperatures, -5 degree windchill courtesy of a 50mph wind out of the North, and horizontally blowing snow. To say the very least, it was incredibly cold and some of the worst photographing conditions imaginable. I somehow was able to get a few good shots despite the above mentioned conditions. I spent a good 20 minutes outside in total and have a pretty nice wind rash to show for it. We had a great time at the Plaza and enjoyed an incredible meal at Fogo De Chao. The Thursday night before heading to Kansas City, Jared and I got few photos of the Tulsa skyline from the South Peoria Bridge at Highway 51. I’m undergoing shoulder surgery tomorrow (yes another one), and will be severely limited in my photo taking adventures for a few weeks. I hope to have 3-4 more blog posts this year so keep checking back. The next blog will feature a wedding video I made for Tyrel & Lana shot completely on my Canon 5D Mark II digital camera. On another note, I finished my last exam final of my Chiropractic College career and now only have to complete 4-6 weeks of clinic time when I return in January. The light is at the end of the tunnel and I’m ready to get rockin’ back in Tulsa! -Barnezy-

This past weekend I got to take part in the 2010 Route 66 marathon in Tulsa, OK. No, I didn’t run it, but I felt like I had after lugging around 20 pounds of camera equipment for six hours. I took some photos at this race last year because my dad was running in it. This year, I was hired based on the photos I took last year. Who says Facebook isn’t good for anything? The marathon directors are great to work with any allowed me free range to shoot whatever I wanted. This is where my comfort zone is. I can shoot portraits and other posed shots, but I live for capturing the movements. Races like these are incredible places to capture these moments. A lot of times, all of the sacrifices that individuals have made to achieve their goals are manifested on their faces the moment they cross the finish line. Everyone has a different story, and everyone runs for a different reason. The marathon is an incredible event as it brings people from all walks of life together for a common goal. Here is a LINK to the entire album. Feel free to download any picture you would like, prints are extremely affordable as well. I hope that I’m always able to cover at least a few marathons every year. I have more fun then the runners! Maybe one day I’ll get back to running as I’m much more gifted at it then taking photos, but for now, my place is behind the camera. I was saddened to hear of the young man who lost his life during the race. My prayers are with his family. Congratulations to everyone who competed in the marathon, you guys continue to inspire us all! -Barnezy-

My wife is a teacher in Lees Summit, Missouri where she met a very nice fellow teacher who’s husband is quite the inventor. He devised a system called the “Hang Mate” which allows you to quickly and easily attach materials to a classroom, building ceiling etc… It was designed to increase the safety of decorating a classroom’s ceiling. Teachers often fall off of desks while trying to attach bulletin boards, decorations, etc to their classroom ceilings. This device makes it faster, and safer than ever to do so! It’s a very intriguing product with a very nice family behind its creation. You can learn more about this great product at their website www.hang-mate.com. This was my third video shot using a portable Lowel lighting kit. I’m using two Tota lights to add some ambient, one softbox riffa for a key light, an omni for a fill, and a pro-light as a kick light to Ali’s hair. I used a few frosted gels to soften the light on Ali and I think the overall effect turned out quite well. This was shot entirely on a Canon 5D Mark II with the 24-70mm 2.8 L and Canon 100mm Macro 2.8 Lenses mounted to a RedRock Micro Cinema Bundle Post production was with final cut pro and after effects. Just finished up finals today and start six days of board reviews tomorrow. It’s going to be another long week. I need a break! -Barnezy-

This past week I had the opportunity to eat some great chicken and do my first “book shoot.” I first met Dan Britton and his family on Easter Sunday 2008 when some friends invited us to come along to their home for an Easter lunch. Shortly after that time, Dan and I began spending time together where he consistently sewed seeds of wisdom in my life. He’s one of my favorite people in the world and has been like a father to me during my time in Kansas City. “Wisdom Walks”, co-authored by long-time friend Jimmy Page, is Dan’s first publication. I have not read the book yet as it’s not available in stores till August, but if it’s anything like Dan’s life, it will be an amazing read! We chose Dan’s desk for the setting for his book. Dan told me the desk was 100 years old and belonged to both his father and grandfather. These men were great mentors in Dan’s life and I thought how fitting it would be to capture a book about mentoring in this setting. I used my Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro lens mounted to my Gitzo Explorer tripod to accomplish this shot. I used three Canon 580EX II flashes with colored gels and PocketWizards to handle the lighting scenario. The coffee mug was added to create the mood for reading a good book. My wife suggested two mugs given the books content. It took about a half-hour to get the shots we needed and I’m very happy with how they turned out. Hopefully these images will be used for a long time in the promotion of this book. I plan on ordering one from Amazon in the next few weeks. I wander if I can get the authors to sign my copy. On another note, I’ll be posting photos from the Olathe FCA Leadership camp my wife worked last week sometime in the next few days. The Tulsa Firecracker 5K photos are still probably a week away. I hope everyone is enjoying their day, well maybe except Mel Gibson. -Barnezy-

Kalenna is a friend of mine from chiropractic school and she’s been after me for a while to take photos of her and her bow. You see, Kalenna is a competitive bow shooter by trade and shoots for Hoyt. Her brother is sponsored by Hoyt and is also a competitive bow shooter. Kalenna’s husband Shan, is also a competitive shooter but shoots with a Matthews bow instead of a Hoyt. My good friend Alan Yoder and I took Kaleena and Shan out to the bow range at the Shawnee Mission Park for some photos. We started with some traditional “couples” pics with the exception of carrying bows. As the sun went down, we pulled out the strobist equipment and went to work. We wanted to create some “EDGY” bow pics that would show the competitive nature of the couple. We actually shot a few of them with the bows in full draw with a broad-tipped arrow on board. I would not have tried this photo with any one else as it could have been extremely dangerous. I used the “live view ” mode on the 5D Mark II so that I would not have to put my self in the general vicinity of the arrow. Alan did a great job helping me light the shots but I wanted him to have a little fun as well. After 10 minutes of “EDGY” shooting I gave him my camera and told him to have some fun. He took no more than 7 or 8 photos and came up with a spectacular shot. His is the last photo in the sequence. I have some new DSLR video gear arriving today so I will do my best to put a little something together this weekend. I’ve always been intrigued by the magical look of “film” video, so I’m gravitating towards shooting more with my 5D Mark II and less with my video camera. The difference is unbelievable! On a different note, I performed my first outpatient physical yesterday which constitutes me as an official outpatient intern! This has been a long time coming, but it’s been well worth the effort. I hope you all have a safe weekend and enjoy the weather. Get out side and do something! -Barnezy-
He devised a system called the “Hang Mate” which allows you to quickly and easily attach materials to a classroom, building ceiling etc… It was designed to increase the safety of decorating a classroom’s ceiling. Teachers often fall off of desks while trying to attach bulletin boards, decorations, etc to their classroom ceilings. This device makes it faster, and safer than ever to do so! Very intriguing product with a very nice family which is producing it. You can learn more about this great product at their website www.hang-mate.com. This was my first video shot using a portable Lowel lighting kit. I’m using two Tota lights to add some ambient, one softbox riffa for a key light, an omni for a fill, and a pro-light to knock some of the shadows off the chalkboard behind. This was shot entirely on a Canon 5D Mark II with the 24-70mm 2.8 L and Canon 100mm Macro 2.8 Lenses. Post production was with final cut pro and after effects.

Yesterday was an extremely bright day, but Ali and I made the most of the light that we had and shot some photos of one of her best friends. Melanie and her fiance Mike are tremendous people who are an absolute joy to be around. We made the short drive out to Cedar Creek in Olathe and a quick stop by the Nelson Adkins museum near the plaza in KC for their photos. We were going for simplicity with this couple. I didn’t want a ton of posed photos as I tend to start posing people instead of letting them create the magic. For most of these shots, I threw a beauty dish a few feet away with a Canon 580EXII and battery pack and I sat back 20 yards or so with my Canon 5D Mark II and 200mm F.20 IS lens. This allowed them a bit of intimate privacy and allowed me to shoot without feeling like I was encroaching on their moments together. All in all I think they turned out great and look forward to shooting the wedding this summer. I’m nearly one month out of Jaw surgery and recovering nicely. The swelling is probably 80% gone and I’m beginning to experiment with some soft foods. In three weeks from now I will be released to eat most anything. It’s been very difficult to speak these past few weeks but my patients have been very understanding. I’ve nearly completed all three of the physical required to enter our outpatient clinic at Cleveland Chiropractic College so I should be available to the general public by the beginning of next week. This is an exciting time as I will begin making preparations for my final transition to becoming a doctor of chiropractic. The weather is beautiful people, enjoy the day! -Barnezy-
