Gary Gray “Live Function” Seminar in Warwick, RI

I had the opportunity to attend a Gary Gray “live function” in Warwick, RI this weekend with Dr. Michael Peterson. Dr. Peterson has been working with Gary Gray for six years on ways to improve the soft tissue treatments that Dr. Peterson is known for. It was my first Gary Gray seminar, although I have been doing his stretches and exercises for years. The seminar was conducted by Gray Institute faculty member Lenny Parracino of AIM sports medicine in Hermosa Beach, CA. Needless to say, Dr. Peterson and I were the only two representing chiropractic as Gary Gray primarily appeals to physical therapist. Lenny lectured us on an introduction to functional analysis and assessment as well as a days focus on the hip. Gary Gray is famous for introducing “Tri-planar” stretches and exercises to the physical therapy world. This seminar focused on assessment of patient hip pain and weakness with 3-dimensional tests and exercises to treat. It’s a different way of thinking for me since we tend to focus on one plane in our profession. I can tell you one thing for sure, my rear is pretty sore after just a few minutes of these exercises. I intend to do them every day for the next month and see if they’ll take care of some of the low back stiffness I’ve felt the last couple of years. The city of Warwick, RI was a nice town right on the oceanfront just 15 minutes south of Providence. One of the PT’s at the seminar said you could drive across the entire state in 45 minutes. I had a head cold most of the trip so I was unable to get out and take photos of some of the lighthouses I’d heard of. We did however stay at the NYLO hotel, which I understand is short for “New York Loft.” This hotel chain is designed like a New York loft and puts an emphasis on “going green.” What this meant to us was no water pressure and sheets and towels that didn’t get washed. The fact that this hotel was built out of an old abandoned warehouse made things way more interesting. The hotel sported a restaurant and night club which is famous for their “spicy chocolate steak.” I was a bit skeptical, but WOW was it good! The flight home was even more interesting as I flew home in a puddle-jumper plane that a 5′8 tall person would whack their head on the ceiling. To make things even more interesting, a young girl collapsed right in front of me and dragged the flight attendant to the floor with her. Fortunately their was a doctor sitting next to me that sprang into action and saved the day. The girl ended up being ok and we all left the airplane relieved that we didn’t have to land prematurely on some remote highway near a hospital in the sticks. All and all it was a great trip and I learned quite a few concepts that I’m still trying to get straight in my head. Here are a few pics of the weekend as well as a video clip from the seminar. This weekend I traveled to Tulsa with my wife and Alan Yoder, best friend from Cleveland Chiropractic College. Dr. Kirk Iodice, my chiropractor from Olathe, KS, traveled down for the weekend for a little workshop Alan and I put together. The goal was for Dr. Iodice to learn some advanced Active Release Technique modifications to help him with some of his tougher chiropractic patients. Dr. Iodice then showed Dr. Peterson some functional screens and a few therapeutic techniques to help him be more effective and efficient in the office. As part of this meeting, I was wanting to get a new photo of Dr. Peterson for the new website I’ll be building this spring. Dr. Peterson is unique for many reasons, one being that he uses Active Release Technique (the gold standard in soft-tissue mobilization) in the True Stretch, a stretching device created by Gary Gray, the world’s authority on tri-planar rehabilitation. Because of his unique approach in implementing these two tools, I thought it appropriate to photograph him in the True Stretch device. Whilst getting the lighting setup for the shoot, I used Alan as a temporary model. He is one of my favorite subjects to shoot (you can probably tell why from the photos) and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to capture his “awesomeness” on film. The following photos are just a few that we shot for the website. Dr. Peterson and I will be attending a Gary Gray seminar in Rhode Island soon and look forward to seeing how they implement the True Stretch there. I recently purchased a True Stretch out of Oklahoma City after seeing the results Dr. Peterson was getting with it. Goodbye Canon EF 200mm F/1.8 USM

Today I shipped out my beloved Canon EF 200mm f/1.8 prime lens. Purchasing this lens was a dream come true for me, but due to a variety of factors I decided that the best course of action right now was to sell it. I had this amazing piece of equipment for a little under a year and was surprised just how attached I got to it. I’ve never really been attached to a piece of equipment quite like this lens. I think the fact that I shot some of my best work on this lens might have attributed to this attachment. If you know nothing about photography, the Canon EF 200mm f/1.8 was the fastest 200mm ever created. This lens is capable of capturing fast action sports in low light environments better than any other lens ever made. This lens is primarily used by professionals to cover college and professional basketball as well as olympic gymnastics. This lens was made from the mid 90’s through 2004 and is regarded as on of the sharpest lenses Canon ever made! It was discontinued for no other reason that there was a lot of lead waste produced in the manufacturing process of this lens. Canon decided to become more environmentally friendly during this time which ultimately sealed the fate of the 200 f/1.8. Canon has since replaced this lens with a 200mm f/2.0 IS lens which is not as fast, but adds 4 stops of image stabilization. I primarily used this lens for sports and weddings. This lens could create such breathtaking portraits. So I close another chapter in my photography career by selling my favorite tool of all, but I have a feeling I’ll find a replacement for it someday soon. Peterson Chiropractic in Tulsa, OK

I have been a patient of Dr. Michael Peterson’s in Tulsa since November of 2000. The man literally altered my course in life. I had been to chiropractors before but he was the one who made me want to do what I’m doing now. When people ask me when I knew I wanted to be a chiropractor I’m quick to tell the following story… It was my senior year in high school playing for the Union Redskins football team in Tulsa, OK. We were about to enter the playoffs and one day at practice I strained my “groin” muscle very badly. The Illiopsoas muscle complex is the most important muscle for a running athlete so you can imagine how upset I was when I could not lift my knee off the ground, let alone run. I was getting treatment from my athletic trainers, I sought the help of a massage therapist, I sought the help of a physical therapist and my MD. None of their techniques could offer any help whatsoever. The general rule with a groin injury is that you just rest it for several months and it will heal. Here I had missed two games in a row and we were about to enter the playoffs and our team desperately needed my speed at defensive end. So in other words…. I needed to get healthy NOW!!! Well one day after practice, where I pretty much sat around and watched, a man approached me by the bleachers and said something that would change my life forever, “Hi Chris, I’m Dr. Peterson. I’m a chiropractor and I think I can help you with your leg.” I’d been to a few chiropractors over the years and thought to myself how in the world can a back doctor help the muscle in my hip. About five minutes later i got the answer to my question! Active Release Technique was the method in which Dr. Peterson knew he could help me. Dr. Peterson ART on my hip for a painful 5 minutes which seamed like an hour. Upon completion of the treatment which as far as I could tell just caused me more pain, he asked me to lift my knee. Imagine the shock on my face and all of the coaches and trainers in the room when my knee nearly hit my chest. My jaw dropped instantly and so did the coaches. Dr. Peterson told me to go outside and run a few laps. I went outside and to my utter surprise I was able to sprint at 85-90% of my top speed. I started laughing and shouting with excitement at what I took as a miracle! It was at this point in my life that I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Come to find out ART is a big deal in professional sports as it’s the official treatment of the IRONMAN triathlon (the most grueling race in the world). Most major sports teams also have a chiropractor, PT, or athletic trainer who are trained in ART because of it’s ability to get athletes back on the field faster than any other soft tissue treatment out there. Dr. Peterson said he wanted to see me friday before the game and I’d be ready to play. He treated me two days later and I never had another problem with my hip! The next few years Dr. Peterson held me together with ART through my college football career. When I had the chance to do an internship with my undergraduate degree at the University of Tulsa, the choice was easy. I began interning with Dr. Peterson’s office in January of 2006 where he eventually hired me on full time. I worked for him for nearly two years and we decided that I would start my chiropractic career with him. So here I am now just one year from finishing my education at Cleveland Chiropractic College and I’m making preparations to move into Dr. Peterson’s office. It’s a dream come true for me to work for the doctor I have the most admiration for. I was fortunate enough to get to design the new office at Peterson chiropractic (I made my office bigger than Dr. Peterson’s) and will be working on the new website soon. Cleveland Chiropractic College Business Card Luncheon

When a student becomes an intern in the student clinic at Cleveland Chiropractic College, the college has a business card luncheon to commemorate the benchmark in our education. This represents the beginning of our clinical experience and our beginnings as doctors of Chiropractic. We will spend the next trimester diagnosing and treating students at our school, while also learning to do a complete physical. Next trimester we will enter the outpatient clinic where we will be able to treat members of the general public. After 8 months or so in the outpatient clinic, we have the option of interning for a Chiropractor local or abroad where we will finish the rest of education while preparing for the last part of our national board exams. And then like a young bird we are pushed out of the nest where we will either fly… or not. Not the most delicate way to put it, but statistics don’t lie. 40% of chiropractors will fail or change professions within 10 years of graduating. Well on that heavy not, why not a lighter one? We had an absolutely beautiful snow here in Kansas City and the night ended very nicely with a celebration at my favorite restaurant in KC…. Oklahoma Joe’s! A Jumbo Chicken Z-Man and a Jumbo Brisket Z-man hit the spot every single time!!!!! If you’ve never tried Oklahoma Joe’s…… you are only going through the motions of life!!!! IT’S INCREDIBLE!!!!! I attended an extremity adjusting seminar this weekend presented by The Motional Palpation Institute. Dr. King and Winchester are two of the finest instructors I have met at any seminar and they went out of their way to figure out why my wife has pain that no one seems to be able to diagnose correctly. Cleveland Chiropractic Winter Formal 2010

We had the annual Cleveland Chiropractic Winter Formal dance this past weekend and I once again shot the event. We danced the night away at the Crown Center Hyatt hotel in downtown KC. Dinner was good, the desert was great, and the dancing…. well some of it was just plain ugly!!! Even with all of that, we had an incredible time. At times I actually forgot I was working. We set up a makeshift portrait studio with a wall and a few black table cloths. Prints are for sale by clicking on the MENU button that says “Photos” and then by selecting “Buy Prints.” I implemented some strobes via pocketwizards with Canon 580ex II’s and then hit the dance floor. So I shot my first wedding video assignment with a 3 camera setup this past month. I use a Sony HVR-Z5U for my primary camera. As a photographer I own a Canon 5D Mark II and a Canon 7D. Both of these cameras can film in 1080P HD video. However, as of now, the 5D can only film at 30 frames per second, whereas the 7D films at 24 frames per second. 24 frames per second is the standard that nearly every movie is filmed at and therefore creates more of a desirable look. I shot the video with these 3 cameras and then had to convert the footage from the 5D to match the 7D. It’s an incredibly lengthy process taking roughly an hour for each 15 seconds of video. The beauty and advantage of using a Digital SLR to capture video is that you can achieve the same cinematic look that $50,000 cameras can achieve. This is possible primarily because I’m using the same lenses I shoot photos with. In other words, the video looks like the photos. You can create incredibly shallow depth of fields that cause the subject to jump right out of the scene. 99% of these shots were shot handheld and the rest were on a monopod. I’ve ordered a shoulder rig to smooth out the hand-held shots as they’re not where they need to be right now as far as smoothness goes. I’ve compiled a 9 minute video with clips throughout the wedding day to try and tell a story of how the day unfolded. With the new video rig and some experience, I hope to one day shoot incredible wedding videos that people can cherish forever…. well at least for a their time here on earth I hope you enjoy! -Barnezy-

Took a Visit to FCA’s World Headquarters

My wife’s FCA Group at the middle school she teaches at decided to take a little field trip to the Fellowship of Christian Athlete’s World Headquarters in Kansas City, KS for leadership training. Like a good husband, I tagged along with my wife. Ali and I have been involved with FCA since we were very young and neither of us had ever been to the big building off I-70. We were welcomed by some of FCA’s incredible staff and fed some pretty darn good pizza. The kids had several mini-clincs they could go to where they could learn anything from “How to start a Bible Study” to a deeper understanding of the Gospel. I got a tour of the facility from a good friend who works there. It’s structurally a magnificent facility and I one I imagine is a blast to work at! I hope you enjoy the pics. My only regret is that I didn’t bring a tripod. I could have gotten some great stuff!!!

It sounds funny, but a video game for the Playstation 3 has captured my interests as of lately. I bought this game during an after Christmas sale and have never looked back. This game absolutely consumes you. There is “campaign” mode where you play several missions that focus on particular military tasks. The big draw to this game however, is the muti-player mode. You can play against players all across the globe in a virtual environment tailored to specific combat techniques. There are wide open levels that cater to snipers as well as enclosed smaller levels where a knife is all you need to get the job done. Several of my friends have purchased this game. We play online nearly every night for at least an hour. The bluetooth headset I use for my phone has found a new use as it is the communication device I use to talk with my teammates. There are various awards and unlocks that you can attain that keep the game more than interesting. Overall, this is an amazing game (even more fun then “Uncharted 2″) which was my previous favorite. In one week this game became the highest grossing video game of all time. Check it out, but be careful, it’s highly addictive! I’m glad trimester tests haven’t begun yet! -Barnezy-

A foggy, snowy weekend!

Well we had a weird weekend with tons of fog here in KC. Funny enough, it was the first time I’ve seen fog actually bring snow with it. The snow piles around here are still 10 feet tall and probably won’t disappear till April. It was chilly but I haven’t taken pics in a while so I went for two strolls yesterday to document this strange occurrence. I also took photos at a friend’s basketball game on Saturday. It was a dark gym with fluorescent lights (not a good combination), but I was able to squeeze 1/1000th shutter speeds out of my Canon 7D and 200mm 1.8 while keeping a decent exposure. I hope everyone is enjoying 2010! -Barnezy-
