I Landed a 3rd Magazine Cover!

Last week the latest issue of Oklahoma Sports & Fitness Magazine hit the shelves and I was surprised to find that one of my images once again found its way to the cover. In April this year I was freezing my little booties off at the finish line of the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. It was 40 degrees outside with a constant wind, rain, and occasional hail. I remember looking down the road and seeing this young blonde woman flying towards me. she had these really cool arm warmers on and a Red Coyote jersey. She flew right past me and finished 2nd female overall in the marathon. Her name was Katie Kramer, or as many know her, “Karaoke Coyote.” The talented young runner/singing phenomenon is an Oklahoma native that is becoming a dominant force in the state. There is an excellent write-up about her in this month’s section, “Athletes among us.” Katie is currently nursing an injury but will be back on the road soon. This magazine also features my 2nd full-page ad which introduces the term “Tensegrity” to the sports community. The ad is a tad busy, but it draws you in and it’s fairly interesting. There’s also a 2-page spread of the Warrior Dash photos I took this year. My online photo gallery website SmugMug has been visited more times in the month of October than any other month since I started using them in January of 2009. There were over 160,000 photos viewed in the month of October with 50,000 coming in one day! It’s absolutely crazy how much traffic is coming to my galleries. I hope all of these people are downloading a ton of FREE images! Side note: Julie Chin (Oklahoma’s coolest Meteorologist) just added me as her friend on Facebook…. I just gained 12 million cool points! Now back to the blog. This marked the third time I’ve had a cover shot for Oklahoma Sports & Fitness Magazine. I’m slowly on my way to the cover of Sports Illustrated. Well maybe not, but who knows? I’m shooting 2-3 more races this year including the Route 66 Marathon which will be a massive run! I’m getting geared up for my first running expo and hope to meet, and tape a whole lot of great people! It’s a busy time in the Barnes household but we’re loving every second of it! -Barnezy-

Strobist Sessions: Peterson Chiropractic Staff Photos

Earlier this week I was asked to take some photos of the Peterson Chiropractic staff. The staff assumed that I was going to roll in with a point and shoot camera or something because they were blown away when they saw all of the strobes I had drug into the physical therapy bay. I used two white lightning X3200 strobes (one with a 48 inch octobox LEFT and a 72 inch Parabolic Umbrella RIGHT), two Canon 580exII’s (one directly behind the TRUE STRETCH cage and one right towards the cage with a grid.) I used a cooling gel on the rear flash to give the cage a cool blue look. I jacked up the shutter speed and set the ISO to “L” to help knock out the ambient light from outside. I then balanced the inside lights and added some people and we were good to go. We took one serious shot for our website and then took some funny ones to send to Dr. Peterson’s son who is serving in Afghanistan. Overall, they turned out pretty well for how quickly we shot them. I did a tad of post processing on the serious shot and the rest are straight out of the camera. It’s nice to have our own in-house pro photographer, an I’m more than happy to lend my services to a wonderful staff that takes such great care of Dr. Peterson and me. My First Radio Interview as “Dr. Barnes”

This past week I had the opportunity to be a guest speaker on Oklahoma Sports & Fitness’s new radio show “On Your Mark” on Tulsa’s 1430 THE BUZZ radio station. This new show focuses on health promotion in the Tulsa area. Sean Call, the editor of Oklahoma Sports & Fitness magazine and Jeremie Poplin host the show which airs every Thursday night at 6:30. Poplin, who lost his father to a heart attack made a drastic change in his lifestyle and has lost a significant amount of weight. The two teamed up and came up with an idea to infuse the Tulsa area with health and fitness tips and motivations. It’s a fantastic show and caters to the elite endurance athlete, bodybuilders, gym rats, and even the person who is just wanting to get off of the couch and do something. This new show is an excellent resource for the Tulsa area and compliments the already outstanding magazine. I’ve shortened the interview to cut out the commercials for the purpose of this blog, the original has 10 minutes of ads. Our very first radio spot is at the very end of the broadcast. I will be doing another half hour interview spot in the spring which should be a lot of fun. I had a great time in the studio with Sean and Jeremie and hope that I brought some things to the attention of Tulsa listeners that will affect their training positively! -Barnezy-

The 2011 Tulsa Susan G Komen Race for the Cure

This past weekend I shot the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure in downtown Tulsa. It was an early morning event beginning at 7:00am. Around 20,000 participants ran or walked the 5K throughout the course of the day. It was really something special to see so many survivors crossing the finish line. This race is unlike any other that I shoot and it has truly been an honor to be a part of it. The race was moved downtown this year to ONEok field and I have to say that I like this setup a lot more than the previous place at 81st and Lewis. I saw several friends running throughout the morning and it was so great to see Jack Wing (cancer survivor) back out there Emceeing a race. I left the race fairly early to go over to Fleet Feet Tulsa to do injury-prevention screenings for about a dozen runners. This was a first for me and I think I was able to help a few people get on the right track. I’m getting geared up for the Warrior Dash race this weekend and it promises to be the craziest race I’ve ever shot. Check back early next week for those photos. It’s been raining all day here in Tulsa which is simply weird given the weather this year. I shot some run and gun portraits yesterday at a local firm and will post some of those later this week or next. If you follow this blog, we’re nearly 3 months into our basketball goal installation, it’s getting ridiculous. Keep checking back for that eventual blog. This past weekend I graduated from Cleveland Chiropractic College with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. This marked the end of nearly four years of post-graduated studies. My professional name will now be “Chris Barnes DC.” It has been a long hard road to get here, but I wouldn’t change anything about it. Ali and I moved to Overland Park, KS in July of 2007. We have literally been in Kansas for 90% of our married lives. We thought we would just move up here and knock this whole school thing out. However, we have met some incredible people and Kansas has become such a wonderful home for us. It will be incredibly hard for us to this place but we will always try to make time to visit Kansas City. The beauty of Overland Park is that it’s less than four hours from Tulsa! I have learned a great deal in the last four years, but I’m even more excited about the things I will continue to learn. I will be starting a practice in Tulsa, OK within the office of Peterson Chiropractic. Ali and I will be relocating to Broken Arrow, OK in late May and Ali will hopefully be getting a new job around the same time. I will continue to visit KC throughout the summer for miscellaneous seminars so it will be a nice slow goodbye. I wanted to thank everyone who has made Kansas City such a great home these past few years. We will not forget all of the wonderful people… and barbecue! Check back regularly as we have lot of other great things to share with you all. And yes, from now on you must call me “Dr. Barnes!” -Barnezy-

ART Seminar in Cincinnati

I spent this past weekend in Cincinnati for an Active Release Techniques – Long Tract Nerve seminar. This was my final ART seminar of school and a great one to end on. I’m not an “ART Doc” per se but I do utilize the technique in a good chunk of patients. I had never been to Cincinnati before so I had to lug along a camera and tripod. I spent friday afternoon at Mount Lookout Chiropractic shadowing Dr. Mark King who is the president of the Motion Palpation Institute. My good friend Alan Yoder has been doing his Chiropractic internship at this clinic since January. Friday night I got to eat one of the best hamburgers I’ve ever had at “Terry’s Turf Club.” Saturday we spent the day at the ART Seminar followed up by some of the best hot dogs I’ve ever eaten at “Senate” restaurant. It was a gorgeous night in Cincy so Yoder and I drug our tripods around and took some photos of some of the bridges and the skyline. On Sunday, we ventured out to the Keeneland horse races in Kentucky. I lost two dollars but Alan turned $5 into $76 on his first ever horse bet. We left immediately afterwards before Alan’s luck changed. Monday we drove back to Kansas City in preparation for our graduation from Chiropractic school. I still can’t believe it’s been four years! I’ll be blogging a lot this next month with so many life transitions so check back to see the craziness that’s taking place. Hope you all are doing well! -Barnezy-

MPI Gait Seminar 2011

This past weekend I traveled to the great city of Chicago for my second MPI gait seminar. About a dozen Cleveland students and another 160 or so students and doctors were in attendance. The seminar was held in a conference room in the Sara Lee building. This year, the seminar was even better with much more in the realm of analysis and less focus on treatment. The treatment portion is covered more thoroughly in the extremities seminars. The guest speakers were Peter Breeze from New Balance and Shawn Eno, a pedorthist and owner of Xtreme Footwerks. The MPI instructors did a fantastic job in lectures as well as the gait labs. On Saturday night, I ventured downtown and ate at the renowned Lou Malnati’s pizza restaurant. The deep dish Pepperoni was one of the bests I’ve ever had! I then ventured over to the Adler planetarium and took a few photos of downtown. The skyline was a bit different as it was earth hour and much of the city lights had been turned off. The temperature was about 25 degrees, but the wind was blowing in excess of 50mph. I got some pretty good windburn on my face, but it was worth it to get a nice skyline photo. I’m looking forward to my next MPI seminar in June where I’ll be spending time on my favorite region; the shoulder. It’s been an absolutely insane month but things are going great. Ali and I made our final offer on a local house and are waiting to see if they are going to accept it. So many life translations at once, but it’s been a great ride! -Barnezy-

Merry Christmas! What a lazy day! I’ve been sitting around all day enjoying doing absolutely nothing! It’s been a great time spending time with my family and just taking it easy for a change. We’ve opened lots of presents and eaten tons of good food! I’ve really missed being back home and this has been a great vacation. My shoulder is healing up nicely from last week’s shoulder surgery as well. I can almost lift my arm over my head and I get better every day. Ali and I got some money to put towards our Hawaii trip so we’re super-excited about how much fun we’ll be having in three short months. Here’s a few photos from this weekend…

Well it’s also been one year to the day that my Mother-in-law and Grandmother-in-law teamed up to get me one heck of a Christmas present. They both chipped in to buy me the wordpress blogging software ProPhoto so that I could rebuild my aging and nearly-abandoned website from the ground up. With this new software I was able to rebuild my website in a much more user-friendly format. The photos and videos in particular became much faster to view. The video quality went from youtube quality at best to 720p HD video. Blogs and updates were incredibly hard with my old website. I had made one update the past 1.5 years I had my old website. This year I have made 80 blog posts to the date! I’m so thankful to have such a nice site to showcase some of my work on. I hope that I’ll always have time to continue to add as my experiences grow. Apparently my website is actually worth something as well. Due to the high traffic I see daily thanks largely in-part to our now famous proposal video, my website is worth $8,600.00. Of course I would never sell it, but it’s really nice to know that people visit regularly! I really do appreciate all of the wonderful comments all of you have left on my website. It’s so nice to know that some of the virtues my wife and I strive for are still held by so many others! The next few days will be a whirlwind but our new years plans to be quite interesting this year. Check back on New Years Day for an update on all of the crazy things happening! We hope you all enjoyed Christmas and hope that you were able to spend it with those whom you love. It is never my point to rub religion in the face of anyone, but I do hope that Christ is honored in the manner in which you celebrate Christmas each year. -Barnezy-

2010 Route 66 Marathon

This past weekend I got to take part in the 2010 Route 66 marathon in Tulsa, OK. No, I didn’t run it, but I felt like I had after lugging around 20 pounds of camera equipment for six hours. I took some photos at this race last year because my dad was running in it. This year, I was hired based on the photos I took last year. Who says Facebook isn’t good for anything? The marathon directors are great to work with any allowed me free range to shoot whatever I wanted. This is where my comfort zone is. I can shoot portraits and other posed shots, but I live for capturing the movements. Races like these are incredible places to capture these moments. A lot of times, all of the sacrifices that individuals have made to achieve their goals are manifested on their faces the moment they cross the finish line. Everyone has a different story, and everyone runs for a different reason. The marathon is an incredible event as it brings people from all walks of life together for a common goal. I hope that I’m always able to cover at least a few marathons every year. I have more fun then the runners! Maybe one day I’ll get back to running as I’m much more gifted at it then taking photos, but for now, my place is behind the camera. I was saddened to hear of the young man who lost his life during the race. My prayers are with his family. Congratulations to everyone who competed in the marathon, you guys continue to inspire us all! -Barnezy-

2010 Route 66 5K and Quarter Marathon

This past Saturday, the Williams’ Route 66 5K and Quarter Marathon took place in the Blue Dome district in downtown Tulsa. There were over 2,000 participants this year and a ton of cheering fans to go with them. I was commissioned by the marathon director to primarily stick by the finish line to try and get those great faces as people finished so the majority of my photos were taken inside of a few square blocks. I didn’t really mind this because carrying my gear around tends to get heavy after a while. This was a fantastic event with well over 400 volunteers involved. The race started and finished at the front door of the new Fleet Feet Tulsa in the Blue Dome District. This is a great new running store that’s sure to become a hot spot with the running community! After shooting the marathon I had a few hours to recharge my batteries and catch my breath before driving the Muskogee, OK to shoot a wedding. I took along my good friend Jared Glover for his first experience as a second wedding photographer. He had a blast and took some great photos. I’ll be posting photos from the wedding sometime within the next week or so. My finals begin this week and carry through next week. We also have board reviews for five days out of my trimester break. I’m not a huge fan of the situation, but if I pass my boards it’ll be worth it. Things are beginning to get busy in the clinic and should become very busy this next month with being able to work in the clinic nearly the entire day. So if you’re in KC, and your back, neck, shoulders, knees ( you get the point) hurt, drop me a line and come see me! -Barnezy-
