Clay and Tasha’s E-Session

Last Sunday morning I had the opportunity to shoot some engagement photos with an old friend and his fiance. I’ve known Clay since the inter-school rivalry of our 7th grade football teams. I met his fiance Tasha Sunday morning for the first time. The couple met us in Tulsa’s “blue dome district” for a quick 4th of July photo shoot. We walked around the blue-dome district for some nice pics and ultimately drove to a few different spot in downtown Tulsa. At one point, Ali and I were shooting some photos of Clay and Tasha when a few rednecks drove up in a Dodge Ram pickup and yelled out “happy 4th of July” and then threw an M-60 at my wife’s feet. Luckily she has the reflexes of a cat and was able to jump out of the way before the firecracker exploded. This was quite a ridiculous moment, but was quickly forgotten (by me at least) and we continued shooting. The sun couldn’t make up its mind so we tried to shoot in the shade as much as possible. For as much as we were moving around I opted to shoot everything on camera and I think they came out ok. We shot everything inside an hour and a half and I was able to get home to be with my family for my birthday. Overall, I think it was a great session and I think that their October 7th wedding might be a lot of fun to shoot. I’m in the middle of shooting videos at FCA Camp at Mid-America Nazarene University this week so things have been incredibly busy. I’ve seen a few outpatients this week in our Overland Park clinic so things are starting to “snow ball” a little now. I’m still processing wedding photos and Fleet Feet Firecracker 5K photos so hopefully I’ll get those up inside the next week. Hope you guys enjoy the rest of your week. -Barnezy-

Kansas City Sanctuary of Hope 5K Trail Run

Our chiropractor here in Kansas City, Dr. Kirk Iodice ,put together a team of patients to run in this year’s annual Sanctuary of Hope 5K run. There is a 5K trail run as well as a 5K road race. My wife bravely volunteered for the trail run without fully knowing the implications of her decision. This morning Ali had her first experience with a trail run. Needless to say that the best 5K time was around the 30 minute mark which is incredible taking into consideration that the top five finishers were competitive high school cross country runners. Ali renamed the race the “sanctuary of utter despair” as she claims the track was simply hill after hill after hill with ridiculous terrain. The last quarter mile of the track she claims that a very large Jesus statue “mocked” her as it smiled and made her feel guilty for all of the curse words she had uttered inside her head. However, my wife is a tough cookie and she finished the race despite any real training and was welcomed at the finish line by Dr. Iodice and Advanced Chiropractic and Rehab staff who quickly threw her on a table and got her back to feeling well. It’s a great event and only wish that I could be around for it next year. Ali on the other hand, she told me that she never plans to step foot on the grounds of the Sanctuary of Hope ever again. I just smile and laughed, hope you all have a great weekend. I’ll be posting a review of the new iPhone 4 next Thursday when it comes in the mail. -Barnezy-

Mike and Melanie’s E-Session

Yesterday was an extremely bright day, but Ali and I made the most of the light that we had and shot some photos of one of her best friends. Melanie and her fiance Mike are tremendous people who are an absolute joy to be around. We made the short drive out to Cedar Creek in Olathe and a quick stop by the Nelson Adkins museum near the plaza in KC for their photos. We were going for simplicity with this couple. I didn’t want a ton of posed photos as I tend to start posing people instead of letting them create the magic. For most of these shots, I threw a beauty dish a few feet away with a Canon 580EXII and battery pack and I sat back 20 yards or so with my Canon 5D Mark II and 200mm F.20 IS lens. This allowed them a bit of intimate privacy and allowed me to shoot without feeling like I was encroaching on their moments together. All in all I think they turned out great and look forward to shooting the wedding this summer. I’m nearly one month out of Jaw surgery and recovering nicely. The swelling is probably 80% gone and I’m beginning to experiment with some soft foods. In three weeks from now I will be released to eat most anything. It’s been very difficult to speak these past few weeks but my patients have been very understanding. I’ve nearly completed all three of the physical required to enter our outpatient clinic at Cleveland Chiropractic College so I should be available to the general public by the beginning of next week. This is an exciting time as I will begin making preparations for my final transition to becoming a doctor of chiropractic. The weather is beautiful people, enjoy the day! -Barnezy-

Votja Reflex Locomotion Seminar Final Thoughts

I attended a seminar this weekend in Kansas City to learn a technique that has been beneficial to both myself and my wife. This technique, called Vojta therapy or “Reflex Locomotion” is not chiropractic but rather the creation of Czech Neurologist Dr. Vaclav Vojta. I have written a brief summary of this technique below, but from first hand experience, I can say this treatment is simply remarkable. For 20+ years I was a “chest breather” which can have chronic physiological consequences. At an Motion Palpation Institute seminar over a year ago, the seminar presenter, Kirk Iodice performed 5 minutes of this reflex technique on me without my knowledge of what exactly was taking place. He stimulated my central nervous system

by retrieving “developmental files” that had been locked away in my memory stores since I was an infant. He used these “files” to activate my diaphragm and since that day, I have been a belly breather. Diaphragmatic breathing, also known as “belly breathing” is the correct way to breath and improves spinal stability as well as decreasing neck, shoulder pain and a variety of other pathological compensations. My overall impression was that the seminar was a bit overwhelming. These classes are usually taught in Germany or the Czech republic over a 2 week period. We tried to shove everything into a 12 hour class. I saw and experienced some pretty remarkable things this weekend. It’s very creepy when someone stimulates a muscle in your body to fire and your limbs start moving without you consciously moving them. There were at least a half-dozen times that my arms lifted off the table. My friend Alan was stimulated by 3 different people at one time in a position called the “roll” and had significant muscle activation. He literally brought his knees up and rolled his body onto it’s side. His muscles were contracting so hard that they literally lifted him off the table while he was “relaxed.” When they released their stimulation contacts and his muscles finally relaxed, he felt extremely fatigued. Iv’e got to say that’s it’s pretty weird to know that a technique exists that can make your muscles do things that you are not telling them to do. That’s kind of the point of the technique though! There are people who suffer with cerebral palsy who are unable to activate these muscles effectively, but reflex locomotion makes it possible to restore much of their motor control. People who have developed horrific compensation patters by using accessory muscles to accomplish tasks of prime mover muscles can see tremendous results by simply stimulating those dormant muscles to activate themselves. I’m not sure what capacity I’ll use this in my practice, but I know for sure that my patients with chronic neck and shoulder pain will do wonders with stimulation of the diaphragm to correct faulty breathing patterns. Reflex locomotion is a highly specialized form of physical therapy that was developed at the beginning of the 1950’s by a Czech Pediatric neurologist Prof. Dr. Vaclav Vojta. Originally this technique was developed to enhance motor development of children affected by cerebral palsy.

Reflex locomotion uses specific stimulation zones in a specific positioning of the patient to facilitate motor response called “Global pattern”. Muscles throughout the body are activated in a coordinated pattern and at the same time the central nerves system is addressed at all its regulatory levels.

Reflex locomotion not only activates skeletal muscles but also smooth muscles like circulatory, bladder and bowl control.
Besides motor control the technique also improves cognition, breathing and digestion.
Reflex locomotion is not learning or training process, it activates inborn physiological movements via stimulation of the CNS. The responses to the stimulation is a coordinated movement of the trunk and extremities and by that restore basic movement patterns, which are part of human movement process such as grasping, rolling, creeping, crawling, walking, stabilization and proper breathing stereotype.

The priority of the treatment is to activate the dysfunctional muscles which are not entirely under our control but may play a role of a key link in a certain dysfunction.
The goal of the treatment is to improve motor and sensory function as well as improve/restore body perception, body image and differentiation.
Reflex locomotion can be used as a first step in the treatment if the patient can’t correct the poor stereotype voluntarily, and/or if the patient can’t follow the therapist verbal instructions.

2010 Olathe, KS Marathon

I photographed my first non-Oklahoma marathon this weekend. I typically tag along and shoot whatever marathon event my dad is racing in back in Oklahoma but this time around I had friends in Kansas who were running in it and wanted some photos. I also had friends and my good friend Dr. Iodice who were providing the runners with Active Release Technique therapy. I have been itching to shoot some sports action with my new 200mm f2.0 IS Canon lens so this was the perfect opportunity. My wife and my dad are racing in the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon on a relay team later this month and I hope to bring you photos of that as well. As I have mentioned before, I will be undergoing reconstructive jaw surgery this month which will put me down for a while, but I’ll be back soon enough with more photos and videos! MPI “Adjustathon” in Chi Town USA

This past weekend was filled with a lot of adjusting. 22 or so Cleveland Chirorpactic College students traveled 500+ miles to the windy city for the annual “Adjustathon.” This is a seminar the Motional Palpation Institute puts on every year that focuses on adjusting those hard transitional segments that most chiropractors ignore. The seminar was booked back in January with 220 students which required all of the MPI faculty members to attend. The Cleveland students represented well, and I think we all learned a lot of new information and improved our hands on palpations and manipulative techniques as well. The only negative side of this seminar is that you tend to get a little sore from all of your classmates thrusting into your joints over and over again. Add this to the 16-17 hours in the car it took to get there and back, and well… you might have a sore/stiff Monday! Overall, it was a great experience! It’s looking like the spring may finally be here and I’m itching to get out and take some photos! I’m hoping this spring and summer will offer a lot more time to be active with my camera. Gary Gray “Live Function” Seminar in Warwick, RI

I had the opportunity to attend a Gary Gray “live function” in Warwick, RI this weekend with Dr. Michael Peterson. Dr. Peterson has been working with Gary Gray for six years on ways to improve the soft tissue treatments that Dr. Peterson is known for. It was my first Gary Gray seminar, although I have been doing his stretches and exercises for years. The seminar was conducted by Gray Institute faculty member Lenny Parracino of AIM sports medicine in Hermosa Beach, CA. Needless to say, Dr. Peterson and I were the only two representing chiropractic as Gary Gray primarily appeals to physical therapist. Lenny lectured us on an introduction to functional analysis and assessment as well as a days focus on the hip. Gary Gray is famous for introducing “Tri-planar” stretches and exercises to the physical therapy world. This seminar focused on assessment of patient hip pain and weakness with 3-dimensional tests and exercises to treat. It’s a different way of thinking for me since we tend to focus on one plane in our profession. I can tell you one thing for sure, my rear is pretty sore after just a few minutes of these exercises. I intend to do them every day for the next month and see if they’ll take care of some of the low back stiffness I’ve felt the last couple of years. The city of Warwick, RI was a nice town right on the oceanfront just 15 minutes south of Providence. One of the PT’s at the seminar said you could drive across the entire state in 45 minutes. I had a head cold most of the trip so I was unable to get out and take photos of some of the lighthouses I’d heard of. We did however stay at the NYLO hotel, which I understand is short for “New York Loft.” This hotel chain is designed like a New York loft and puts an emphasis on “going green.” What this meant to us was no water pressure and sheets and towels that didn’t get washed. The fact that this hotel was built out of an old abandoned warehouse made things way more interesting. The hotel sported a restaurant and night club which is famous for their “spicy chocolate steak.” I was a bit skeptical, but WOW was it good! The flight home was even more interesting as I flew home in a puddle-jumper plane that a 5’8 tall person would whack their head on the ceiling. To make things even more interesting, a young girl collapsed right in front of me and dragged the flight attendant to the floor with her. Fortunately their was a doctor sitting next to me that sprang into action and saved the day. The girl ended up being ok and we all left the airplane relieved that we didn’t have to land prematurely on some remote highway near a hospital in the sticks. All and all it was a great trip and I learned quite a few concepts that I’m still trying to get straight in my head. Here are a few pics of the weekend as well as a video clip from the seminar. Peterson Chiropractic in Tulsa, OK

I have been a patient of Dr. Michael Peterson’s in Tulsa since November of 2000. The man literally altered my course in life. I had been to chiropractors before but he was the one who made me want to do what I’m doing now. When people ask me when I knew I wanted to be a chiropractor I’m quick to tell the following story… It was my senior year in high school playing for the Union Redskins football team in Tulsa, OK. We were about to enter the playoffs and one day at practice I strained my “groin” muscle very badly. The Illiopsoas muscle complex is the most important muscle for a running athlete so you can imagine how upset I was when I could not lift my knee off the ground, let alone run. I was getting treatment from my athletic trainers, I sought the help of a massage therapist, I sought the help of a physical therapist and my MD. None of their techniques could offer any help whatsoever. The general rule with a groin injury is that you just rest it for several months and it will heal. Here I had missed two games in a row and we were about to enter the playoffs and our team desperately needed my speed at defensive end. So in other words…. I needed to get healthy NOW!!! Well one day after practice, where I pretty much sat around and watched, a man approached me by the bleachers and said something that would change my life forever, “Hi Chris, I’m Dr. Peterson. I’m a chiropractor and I think I can help you with your leg.” I’d been to a few chiropractors over the years and thought to myself how in the world can a back doctor help the muscle in my hip. About five minutes later i got the answer to my question! Active Release Technique was the method in which Dr. Peterson knew he could help me. Dr. Peterson ART on my hip for a painful 5 minutes which seamed like an hour. Upon completion of the treatment which as far as I could tell just caused me more pain, he asked me to lift my knee. Imagine the shock on my face and all of the coaches and trainers in the room when my knee nearly hit my chest. My jaw dropped instantly and so did the coaches. Dr. Peterson told me to go outside and run a few laps. I went outside and to my utter surprise I was able to sprint at 85-90% of my top speed. I started laughing and shouting with excitement at what I took as a miracle! It was at this point in my life that I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Come to find out ART is a big deal in professional sports as it’s the official treatment of the IRONMAN triathlon (the most grueling race in the world). Most major sports teams also have a chiropractor, PT, or athletic trainer who are trained in ART because of it’s ability to get athletes back on the field faster than any other soft tissue treatment out there. Dr. Peterson said he wanted to see me friday before the game and I’d be ready to play. He treated me two days later and I never had another problem with my hip! The next few years Dr. Peterson held me together with ART through my college football career. When I had the chance to do an internship with my undergraduate degree at the University of Tulsa, the choice was easy. I began interning with Dr. Peterson’s office in January of 2006 where he eventually hired me on full time. I worked for him for nearly two years and we decided that I would start my chiropractic career with him. So here I am now just one year from finishing my education at Cleveland Chiropractic College and I’m making preparations to move into Dr. Peterson’s office. It’s a dream come true for me to work for the doctor I have the most admiration for. I was fortunate enough to get to design the new office at Peterson chiropractic (I made my office bigger than Dr. Peterson’s) and will be working on the new website soon. Cleveland Chiropractic College Business Card Luncheon

When a student becomes an intern in the student clinic at Cleveland Chiropractic College, the college has a business card luncheon to commemorate the benchmark in our education. This represents the beginning of our clinical experience and our beginnings as doctors of Chiropractic. We will spend the next trimester diagnosing and treating students at our school, while also learning to do a complete physical. Next trimester we will enter the outpatient clinic where we will be able to treat members of the general public. After 8 months or so in the outpatient clinic, we have the option of interning for a Chiropractor local or abroad where we will finish the rest of education while preparing for the last part of our national board exams. And then like a young bird we are pushed out of the nest where we will either fly… or not. Not the most delicate way to put it, but statistics don’t lie. 40% of chiropractors will fail or change professions within 10 years of graduating. Well on that heavy not, why not a lighter one? We had an absolutely beautiful snow here in Kansas City and the night ended very nicely with a celebration at my favorite restaurant in KC…. Oklahoma Joe’s! A Jumbo Chicken Z-Man and a Jumbo Brisket Z-man hit the spot every single time!!!!! If you’ve never tried Oklahoma Joe’s…… you are only going through the motions of life!!!! IT’S INCREDIBLE!!!!! I attended an extremity adjusting seminar this weekend presented by The Motional Palpation Institute. Dr. King and Winchester are two of the finest instructors I have met at any seminar and they went out of their way to figure out why my wife has pain that no one seems to be able to diagnose correctly.
