Christmas “Break” 2011

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks which is why I’m just now getting this blog up on the website. Ali and I had a great Christmas “break” and feel a little bit more recharged going into this new year. As a teacher, Ali got two weeks of for Christmas. I on the other hand experienced my very first year of life without a Christmas break. As a business owner I was able to take off a few days around the holidays which was great! This was also the first year we did not go to my parents house for some sort of gift opening. Mom and dad moved to Lawton this year and our whole tradition got switched around a bit. Dad had to work on Saturday but did make it in time for dinner at the grandparents house on Christmas Eve. This is a 35 year tradition so we’re glad he made it just in the nick of time! Ali and I drive from Owasso to Edmond on Christmas Eve night around 9 pm every year. We woke up and opened presents with Ali’s family and then went to church for a Christmas service. We continued our tradition of getting up early on the day after Christmas where we stocked up on some Christmas lights for next year as well as a couple of goodies! For New Years Eve we hung out with our FCA group in a cabin on Tenkiller lake in Oklahoma. It was a relaxing time with friends and a good time as always. Ali and I went back to work on the 2nd and are ready for the new year! This is going to be a BUUUUUUUUSSSSYYYYY year! I hired a part-time employee to help with some of the load at the office. I’m planning on going to about 6-8 seminars this year as I slacked off a little this past year with the start of a new practice. On the photography front, I recently sold my Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 1D Mark III, Canon 24-70mm 2.8 L lens, and Canon 15mm 2.8 Fisheye lens in preparation for the new Canon 1Dx. I purchased the new Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS II on December 31st as there was a huge $400 rebate for one day only. I also picked up the new Canon 8-15mm fisheye lens to use on my current camera body, the Canon 7D. There has been a lot of switcharooing around here but I’m hoping to have a great rig put together by the Oklahoma City Marathon this year. I’m even toying with the idea of selling my Canon 200mm f2 IS and buying a Canon 300mm f2.8 IS for the extra length on a full-frame. Anyway, a lot of camera talk. I also just bought a new wordpress template for my business website and hope to start building that soon! I hope you all had a great Christmas holiday season and are a little bit more rested for the new year. Barbecue, Christmas lights, and good friends

‘Tis the season to travel to the Mecca of BBQ and eat so much that you sweat barbecue sauce! A few weeks back we took our friends the Sheffields to Kansas City for a tour of the best barbecue on the planet earth. I’m sure that will be hotly debated by Tennessee and Texas residents but as far as the world is concerned Kansas City is king! The Sheffields had not spent much time in KC and therefore we thought it was our duty as friends and former KC residents to give them the proper tour of barbecue! We ate at Oklahoma Joe’s twice and the original Fiorella’s Jackstack in Martin City. I wish we could have taken them to Gates and Arthur Bryant’s, but there’s only so much a body can take in a given weekend! We had an amazing time seeing old friends, shopping at the Plaza, Nebraska Furniture Mart, Cabellas, Legend’s etc… This was our first time back in a while and Tulsa is truly home now. When we got back we finished our “Lost” spoof for our 5th year anniversary. My good friend Jared Glover and his girlfriend Lauren helped us film a famous scene from Lost in the parts department at Jim Glover Chevrolet. This was the first time I’ve let Ali participate in the creation of our video. This video used to be a surprise, but after 5 years in a row I guess it’s become expected. This year’s video is pretty stinking funny and will be one to top in the years to come. I’ll be posting that video on Saturday so make sure you come back for that one. Last weekend we had the Sheffields over for an amazing cookout consisting of Pork tenderloin, chicken, steak, and jalapeño/cheddar sausage. We had our own little Brazilian barbecue meal and I performed a controlled burn in our backyard. The fact that the grill is sitting a few feet from the burnt area is merely a coincidence! After an amazing meal, we toured the Rhema Christmas lights display which is now primarily LED’s. It’s simply amazing how bright these things are! We finished off the night with the classic movie “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Allison had never seen it, and there’s no better movie for getting into the holiday season! Things are slowing up a bit at work during this time, but that’s just fine with me! I got to take two of my favorite patients to lunch yesterday for one of their birthdays. Our anniversary and Christmas are just around the corner…. I better get busy shopping.. and making presents! -Barnezy-

Our First Marathon Expo Experience

Two weeks ago we had our first racing expo experience. I have shot the Route 66 Marathon three years running and this year the race director asked me if I wanted a booth at the expo. I knew it would be a crazy weekend but thought to myself, “sure, why not?” I ordered a banner, brochures, business cards, about $800 in Kinesio and strapping tape. We brought my 30 inch Apple cinema display for showing slideshows of my photos from previous races. I sweet talked some of our office staff into helping me on the weekend and asked my sweet wife to do the same. We had a nice spot against the wall that wasn’t in the middle of all of the chaos. We worked all day friday and from 11-6 on Saturday at the Tulsa Convention Center. I ended up treating and taping about 100 people which was a ton! We had a wait list going all-day saturday and there were 20-30 people who we were unable to see due to the constricted hours and the wait. I primarily worked on and taped runners for: Plantar Fasciitis, IT band injuries, Knee Pain, Shin Splints, and low back pain. I think we were able to help most runners get through the race and I got a lot of hugs at the finish line where I was taking pictures. Overall it was a great experience and we had several new patients come into our office after the weekend. I think we’ll definitely have to have a booth there next year and perhaps at the Tulsa Run expo as well. I could definitely not managed the booth without my lovely bride and our two exceptional staff members. Thanks again you guys! 2011 Route 66 Marathon

Two weekends ago I shot the Route 66 5K and Marathon events in Tulsa. This was my third time shooting the marathon and second as an official photog. They even gave me credentials this year because I begged for them. They typically say something to the effect, “Your camera is your credentials!” and so far that has been true, but I like to collect credential tags since I’m not a legit professional. This year was the first year I shot the race as “Dr. Barnes” which was fun since I had a booth at the Expo. I will blog on that adventure soon enough. It was an absolutely grueling weekend with the 12-13 hours of shooting photos plus 18+ hours working on and taping runners. It was a crazy, crazy time and my cameras got plenty of work. I’m definitely a little relieved that my race year is winding down and I don’t really have any more races to shoot till next spring. This is a good thing as I’m selling a lot of my camera gear to put towards the new Canon 1dx which goes up for sale in March. This year the Route 66 event took place over two days with the 5K being on Saturday morning and the marathon being on Sunday morning. I think I really liked this change and it made shooting everything a little easier as well. One of the really cool events this year was the “Mascot Dash.” There were 15-20 mascots that ran a 200 meter footrace. Afterwards they danced with about 50 kids to songs like “Cupid Shuffle” and the “Cha Cha slide.” It was an absolutely awesome moment and the kids, mascots and spectators had an amazing time! I shot over 1200 photos this year which is easily double of any other race I’ve done. That’s a lot of photos, but they turned out pretty well. It was a bitter cold day on Sunday and I found out that my autofocus on my Canon 1D III works a lot better without me having to activate it by pushing through a big squishy glove. Overall it was a great weekend and I really enjoy this event and hope to be asked to shoot it for years to come. The expo was also a really fun experience so I’ll most definitely try to do that in the future even though it makes the weekend crazy! On a different note, my wife and I spent last weekend with my brother-in law in Charlottesville , Virginia for Thanksgiving. I’ll be posting a blog on that hopefully this week. I have about a dozen more blogs to do before the year is out so I’ll be busy. The anniversary is right around the corner so come back for the 5th year anniversary video, it’s going to be a good one! 2011 McNellie’s Pub Run

I’m a couple weeks behinds on blogs so I’m playing catch up today. A few weeks back I shot the McNelli’s Pub Run in downtown Tulsa. This is a great 4 mile Tulsa event that draws a lot of people and a lot of Guiness! Many of the runners were participating in the “Guiness Challenge” where they had to drink a pint of Guiness every 1.3 miles of the course. This really makes things interesting and I saw a handful of people who were unable to keep down their Guiness. This was my first time shooting this event and was invited by a few patients who were participating. The event was a lot of fun and I wish I could have stayed longer to enjoy a Guiness with my patients. Maybe next year! Well it’s been a crazy couple of weeks (as usual) and I’m currently enjoying some good down time with my brother-in law and wife. I’ve got upcoming blogs from the Route 66 Marathon, the Route 66 Expo and a trip to Virginia I recently had. The holiday season is vastly approaching and the office is getting insanely busy, but that’s what I live for! Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend with family and friends! -Barnezy-

Xtreme Footwerks in Idaho Springs, Colorado

Two weeks ago Ali and I spent a weekend with my good friend Dr. Alan Yoder in Golden Colorado. We visited Thornton, Colorado Springs and Idaho Springs as well. In Idaho springs there is an orthotic maker by the name of Shawn Eno. He is a certified pedorthist and I first made his acquaintance in 2009 at an MPI Gait seminar in Lombard, IL. We had many of the MPI instructors lecturing as well as Peter Breeze of New Balance (then with NIKE). Shawn was the last lecturer and blew us away in terms of content and his understanding of biomechanics and corrections he could make with custom orthotics. At the time Shawn was working with the Gait Guys but now has his own practice called Xtreme Footwerks. It’s located in a historical building in downtown Idaho Springs, CO. I spoke with Shawn at the 2011 MPI Gait Seminar about possibly working with him in making our patients orthotics. When I started working with Dr. Peterson in April, he was very receptive to the idea of us having a true custom orthotic for our patients instead of the Quadrastep system they had been using for a year or so. I dove right in and bought 25 casting boxes and a pedograph and we casted our first patient in June. Since then, I’ve performed something like 40 exams and we have built a ton of orthotics together. The exam Shawn has us perform is beyond impressive. We look at gait, torsional deformities (like twists in the leg bones), foot dynamics, knee/hip orientation etc. The exam takes me about a half hour and then we ship the casts to Shawn where he builds one of the best orthotics out there. He builds an EVA foam orthotic as well as an acrylic (springy) orthotic. He can make any number of modifications to any orthotic we build, making them a true custom solution. Our patients have been overwhelmingly impressed with the orthotics. In my clinic, I see primarily runners and other endurance athletes and they are surprised by how comfortable these orthotics are. I have yet to see an orthotic made by a podiatrist that is actually comfortable enough for a an endurance athlete. Shawn has a great nitch with his orthotics because they are extremely comfortable and corrective at the same time. My wife has been wearing his orthotics for two years and was unable to run without them due to femoral and tibial deformities she has. She’s a huge fan, and I’m a huge fan as well! Without his orthotics I would be unable to do any sort of running or endurance training. The purpose of our trip was for me to refine my examination and learn a few things from Shawn. I also wanted to tour the facility and see what all goes into his orthotic manufacturing so I could share that with our patients back home. I also wanted him to build me a new set of orthotics as I’m planning on training for a 5K this year and want to be able to run it FAST! We spent about three hours with Shawn at Xtreme Footwerks and were blown away by his assessment and manufacturing process. After seeing what he does, I think we should be charging a lot more for these orthotics. I’m glad we’re able to provide them for an affordable cost to our patients, but I think they would be blown away by the care and attention given to every pair of orthotics. Overall it was an incredible experience and Alan and I both learned a ton. We filmed the entire exam and some of the manufacturing process and I may post some of that later on if I find some time. This has been a crazy week as I’m preparing for the Route 66 Marathon expo on Friday and Saturday. I’m also shooting the Route 66 Marathon and 5K’s this weekend so I’ll be posting some of those photos hopefully next week. My practice has been growing by leaps and bounds since September and we feel very blessed that so many people have trusted us in getting them back on the road! -Barnezy-

Weekend in Colorado

Two weeks ago my wife and I took a short business/vacation weekend to Colorado. Dr. Alan Yoder, my best friend from chiropractic college invited us up to stay with him in Golden, CO while we attended to a few things. First thing is first, on Friday morning we visited Xtreme Footwerks in Idaho Springs, CO where we met with our pedorthist Shawn Eno. He spent a few hours with us doing an orthotic exam on me and showing us how everything is made in his shop. It was an invaluable learning experience and I’ve written a separate blog about it HERE. We next drove to Thornton, CO where Alan works to meet up with Dr. Greg Doerr (one of the founders of FAKTR.) He was in Thornton visiting his in-laws which worked out perfect as Alan’s office is also in Thornton. We drove over to Colorado Spine and Joint where I got to see another one of my classmates and Alan’s partner, Dr. Alex Aten. We spent an hour or two shooting some “macros” for some previous FAKTR videos I had shot back in June in Kansas City. After that, we all went to Greg’s in-laws house and had an unforgettable evening. Anytime we get with Greg and his wife Adinda, the conversations are nothing less than hilarious. I have not laughed that hard in a very long long time. Alan and Ali actually made the comment that their faces hurt when we left that night from laughing so hard! Saturday was a “free day” where we got to hang out around Golden. Ali and I went for a 5 mile hike while Alan was working on runners at a local 5k. We went to the top of “table rock” in Golden, CO, which is really kind of in Alan’s backyard. We did not have to drive at all to get there! We spent Saturday evening visiting downtown Golden and eating at the exceptional “Woody’s Wood Fire Pizza” restaurant. On Sunday, we got up early and drove 90 minutes to Colorado Springs to visit the Garden of the Gods. I wanted to see it at sunrise, but my fatigued brain miscalculated the new daylight savings time sunrise time and we showed up an hour too late. We still got some very nice photos of the park and I was blown away by the majesty of that place. I had never seen the Garden of the Gods and I didn’t have to contemplate for one second why they called it that. While we were in Colorado Springs, we jumped over to Anabolic Labs to say hi to Dr. Tom Hyde (the other FAKTR founder) who was actually teaching a FAKTR seminar in the conference room. Ali and I caught a late flight home on Sunday and made it back just in time to experience our first Oklahoma earthquake. It was an incredible weekend and I cannot wait to get back there. Alan said we needed to visit in the summer so we could do some serious hiking. Since Ali and I were crazy enough to knock out Longs Peak only 24 hours after being at altitude back in 2007, I’d say we’re up for about anything! This week may be the busiest week of my life so there won’t be a lot of work on this site, but I have three to four new blogs that will be dropping by the end of the month. Until then…. -Barnezy-

I Landed a 3rd Magazine Cover!

Last week the latest issue of Oklahoma Sports & Fitness Magazine hit the shelves and I was surprised to find that one of my images once again found its way to the cover. In April this year I was freezing my little booties off at the finish line of the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. It was 40 degrees outside with a constant wind, rain, and occasional hail. I remember looking down the road and seeing this young blonde woman flying towards me. she had these really cool arm warmers on and a Red Coyote jersey. She flew right past me and finished 2nd female overall in the marathon. Her name was Katie Kramer, or as many know her, “Karaoke Coyote.” The talented young runner/singing phenomenon is an Oklahoma native that is becoming a dominant force in the state. There is an excellent write-up about her in this month’s section, “Athletes among us.” Katie is currently nursing an injury but will be back on the road soon. This magazine also features my 2nd full-page ad which introduces the term “Tensegrity” to the sports community. The ad is a tad busy, but it draws you in and it’s fairly interesting. There’s also a 2-page spread of the Warrior Dash photos I took this year. My online photo gallery website SmugMug has been visited more times in the month of October than any other month since I started using them in January of 2009. There were over 160,000 photos viewed in the month of October with 50,000 coming in one day! It’s absolutely crazy how much traffic is coming to my galleries. I hope all of these people are downloading a ton of FREE images! Side note: Julie Chin (Oklahoma’s coolest Meteorologist) just added me as her friend on Facebook…. I just gained 12 million cool points! Now back to the blog. This marked the third time I’ve had a cover shot for Oklahoma Sports & Fitness Magazine. I’m slowly on my way to the cover of Sports Illustrated. Well maybe not, but who knows? I’m shooting 2-3 more races this year including the Route 66 Marathon which will be a massive run! I’m getting geared up for my first running expo and hope to meet, and tape a whole lot of great people! It’s a busy time in the Barnes household but we’re loving every second of it! -Barnezy-

The 2011 Tulsa Run

This past weekend I had the opportunity to shoot the Tulsa Run for the second time. The first time I shot it was in 2009 which was actually the very first race I ever went to with my dad. This whole running photography thing all started in 2009 when my dad decided to do something about his health and joined a running group at Fleet Feet. I was in chiropractic school 250 miles away but my dad would invite us down for the weekend to hang out and go to these races he started doing. He suggested I lug my huge camera to the Tulsa Run and take some photos of him finishing. Well to make a long story short….. I was bored just waiting on him so I took photos of lots of people. A month later he was running in the Route 66 Marathon and so I shot that race as well. I posted some photos on Facebook and before you know it I was getting a call from the Route 66 director asking me if he could buy my photos. They now hire me every year to shoot the Route 66 races. My father is now living in Lawton and does not really run in any Tulsa races so you’re probably asking yourselves why I still do it. My dad introduced me to Lori Dreiling (owner of Fleet Feet Tulsa) and I began giving her photos for her then owned magazine “Oklahoma Sports & Fitness.” My pictures started showing up in that magazine and when they sold it to Sean Call, he continued to ask me for race photos. I now shoot a lot of different races (when I have time) and Sean makes really cool online galleries and features them in the magazine as well. Even more exciting is that my wife has started to run and actually ran her first 15K yesterday at the Tulsa Run. I could not have been more proud! I also had six patients who ran in the race this weekend. They all made it to the finish and two actually placed very high in their age groups as well as in the overall. It was a chilly morning that soon became the perfect day for a race. One of the absolute greatest joys in my life is taking a patient who has been unable to run and get them back on their feet so they can do what they love. I had one such patient this weekend. Seeing the look on her face as she ran towards me with a big smile made every second of those four grueling years of chiropractic school worth every second! Even if I didn’t know anyone at these races, I would probably still shoot them on occasion because I enjoy seeing people achieve their goals and motivating others in the process. Now back to the race…. Julie Chin was one of the celebrity runners this year and she was kind enough to pose for me on more than one occasion. nearly 10,000 people packed the downtown Tulsa streets for the 34th running of the Tulsa run and the tradition of wearing halloween costumes continued yet again this year. My friend Roy Zoellner once again suited up in full firefighter gear and ran the full 15K. The 5K and the 15K both came down to footraces that were very exciting for the onlookers. These were easily two of the best finishes I’ve ever seen at a race. You can view all of the images I shot at the race HERE. I’m getting geared up for the Route 66 Marathon this next month and then will be selling my two workhorse cameras in order to upgrade to the all-new Canon 1dx DSLR which debuts in March. With this camera, my images will jump a light year ahead of what I’m shooting now as I’m severely limited by the camera’s buffer and low light abilities. On another note, Ali and I will soon be visiting Colorado for a few days as well as Charlottesville, VA to see my brother-in-law for Thanksgiving. We’re also going to be visiting Kansas City in December. We have a lot of traveling to do but it should make for some great times and hopefully…. some great pictures! -Barnezy-

Our first radio commercial

Last month Ali and I met up at the Clear Channel building in Tulsa and cut our first radio spot. Our practice is sponsoring the new show “On Your Mark” on 1430 THE BUZZ and this radio spot will be played during the show 4-5 times each week and run all fall and through the spring. We wanted something simple, but also something that kind of introduced me to the public as I’m still very much in startup mode. Ali helped me with the script and I decided to use her voice as well as we’re very much a team. She sounded GREAT and the spot has gotten a lot of positive feedback.
